Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)
Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER)
PDS Archive Bundle
LID = urn:nasa:pds:lro.crater
Bundle Description
==================
Overview
--------
This bundle contains calibrated (CDR) and derived (DDR) data from
the CRaTER instrument aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Future
versions of the bundle will also include raw (EDR) data from CRaTER.
Each of these three processing levels includes housekeeping (HK),
primary science (PRI), and secondary science (SEC) data.
The Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) is a
stacked detector-absorber cosmic-ray telescope designed to answer
key questions to enable future human exploration of the Solar System.
CRaTER's primary measurement goal is to measure directly the lineal
energy transfer (LET or 'y') spectra caused by space radiation
penetrating and interacting with shielding material. Such measured
LET spectra are frequently unavailable. In the absence of measurements,
numerical models are used to provide estimates of LET -- the reliability
of the models require experimental measurements to provide a ground truth.

Important Notes to Users
========================
These data were migrated in 2024 from the PDS3 archive. The calibrated (CDR)
and derived (DDR) data files were unchanged (with one exception - see below),
but their labels (*.xml) are new to the PDS4 archive. Future expanded versions
of this bundle are planned; these will include PDS4 versions of the raw (EDR)
data from the PDS3 archive, as well as calibration files and other relevant
information. Users interested in the EDR data, and in the PDS3 versions of
calibration and other files, can find them in the PDS3 CRaTER archive, which
consists of three data sets available via the PPI Node's website
(https://pds-ppi.igpp.ucla.edu).
In the original PDS3 data sets, the data files from 2016 DOY 342 contained
occasional incomplete records and did not have PDS3 labels. These issues have
been corrected in this PDS4 bundle. The following files were changed due to
this correction:
CRAT_L1_HK_2016342_V01.TAB
CRAT_L1_PRI_2016342_V01.TAB
CRAT_L1_SEC_2016342_V01.TAB
CRAT_L2_HK_2016342_V01.TAB
CRAT_L2_PRI_2016342_V01.TAB
CRAT_L2_SEC_2016342_V01.TAB
The PDS3 archive of CRaTER data also contains some supplementary files that
were not included in this PDS4 bundle. These files consist of software and
pipeline logs related to the data. These files are now in a separate bundle,
named lro-crater-supp-annex, in the PPI Node data annex.

Data File Naming
----------------
Data files in this bundle are named according to the following convention:
CRAT_L❮level❯_❮type❯_❮yyyy❯❮doy❯_V❮vv❯.TAB
where:
❮level❯ = data processing level (L0, L1 or L2; currently L1 or L2)
❮type❯ = HK (housekeeping), PRI (primary) or SEC (secondary)
❮yyyy❯ = 4-digit year of data coverage date
❮doy❯ = 3-digit day of year data coverage date
❮vv❯ = version number of the file
