Non-Standard Practices
The PDS standards do not specify where to store the required MD5 checksum
file for a volume. We have placed it in the root dircetory of the volume
with the file name "CHECKSUMS.TXT". This may be considered invalid by some
verifiers.
Users are encouraged to provide comments back to the PPI Node of the PDS
if errors or omissions are found either in data or in documentation.
Please send comments by e-mail or U.S. mail to the PPI Node PDS Operator:

An updated version of this file is maintained online at the Planetary
Plasma Interactions Node of the Planetary Data System. The online
errata list can be found on the World Wide Web at
http://www.igpp.ucla.edu/public/pds/ERRATA/MGS/ERRATA.TXT.
NOTE: The errata are listed here according to "logical volume."
These logical volumes were present in the original volume structures
of these data, as originally archived at the PDS. The Premapping
data were in volumes MGSM_1xxx (that is, MGSM_1001, MGSM_1002, etc.).
The Mapping and Extended data were in volumes MGSM_2xxx (that is,
MGSM_2001, MGSM_2002, etc.). These volumes included both MAG and
ER data; hence the errata for both types of data are listed here.
NOTE: The *.STS data files in this data set have some null characters
(ASCII 0) in their headers. (See the errata list below.) If you need help
working with these files because of this feature, contact the PPI Node.
Cumulative errata for the MGSM_xxxx volume set:
Logical
Volume Error/Variance Description
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MGSM_1xxx The files in the DOCUMENT directory contain a draft copy of
and the VOLSIS document. The text version of the document
MGSM_2xxx (VOLSIS.ASC), which is included for completeness, is not
optimally formatted; in particular, the tables are not
displayed properly and the illustrations are not displayed.
Please refer to the other versions of the document
(VOLSIS.HTM, VOLSIS.DOC) for the tables and illustrations.
The headers of *.STS files may contain null characters
(ASCII 0). Some software will display these non-printing
characters as small squares. Other software may open these
files in binary or hexadecimal format.
For some disks in this series (particularly final versions
of MGSM_2001 through MGSM_2030 and preliminary versions of
some other volumes), the URL for the PPI Errata web page
was not yet finalized at the time of the production of the
disk. Hence the URL of the PPI home page was given instead.
(This URL is found in files AAREADME.TXT and ERRATA.TXT,
and as links in AAREADME.HTM.)
The PostScript files under the BROWSE directory have been
labeled as documents. However, since they contain only
image data, they do not have separate ASCII versions.
Also, these files have PDS labels which point to multiple
files from a single label. Although this kind of multiple
labeling is permitted by the PDS Standards, some PDS software
may handle such labels incorrectly.
During the peer review of these disks, the possibility of
adding an ASCII drawing of the ER mounting to the file
ER_INST.CAT was discussed. This proved to be impractical due
to the need to rotate existing ASCII drawings of the
spacecraft (in CATALOG/MAG_INST.CAT and GEOMETRY/MAG_ER.TI)
by angles other than 90 degrees while maintaining
the clarity of the drawings. Hence two illustrations of
the ER geometry, both in JPEG format, were added to the
GEOMETRY directory of this disk. Please refer to those
figures, and to CATALOG/ER_INST.CAT, CATALOG/MAG_INST.CAT
and GEOMETRY/MAG_ER.TI, for information on the positioning
of the ER instrument and on the geometry of the spacecraft
in general.
The PDS has clarified its standards regarding index files
on PDS data volumes. As a result, all new MGSM_xxxx volumes
will contain both an INDEX.TAB file and a MANIFEST.TAB file
in the INDEX directory. The INDEX.TAB file will list only
detached data label files and any data files with attached
PDS labels. It represents a standard PDS index file. The
MANIFEST.TAB file will be a complete index of all files on
the disk. There also will be corresponding cumulative index
and manifest files.
The files /CATALOG/REF.CAT and /DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT, which
contain literature references, have been updated a number of
times during the evolution of these disks. Hence these files
will be more up-to-date and comprehensive on later volumes.
The catalog files (/CATALOG/*.CAT) may be updated during the
evolution of these disks. Hence these files may be more
up-to-date on later volumes.
For CDs that begin or end on mission phase or subphase
boundaries, the dates of the data on the CD may cross over
the actual time boundary by 1 day.
Some copies of the CDs contain files named CHECKSUM.* in
their INDEX directories. These files might not be listed
in the manifest files MANIFEST.TAB and CUMMANIF.TAB.
In some copies of the MGS MAG/ER volumes, the MAG_DATA.FMT
files (under the DATA/MAG/PCENTRIC and DATA/MAG/SUNSTATE
directories) referred to the year 1998. This reference
should be ignored unless the data actually are from 1998.
Some versions of the file CATALOG/REF.CAT contained
variations in the REFERENCE_DESC field of the reference
CHRISTENSENETAL1992. The correct version is as follows:
REFERENCE_DESC = "Christensen, P.R., D.L. Anderson,
S.C. Chase, R.N. Clark, H.H. Kieffer, M.C. Malin, J.C. Pearl,
J. Carpenter, N. Bandiera, F.G. Brown, and S. Silverman, Thermal
emission spectrometer experiment: Mars Observer mission,
J. Geophys. Res., 97, (E5) 7719-7734, 1992."
Because of occasional updates to the file ERRATA.TXT, the
checksum for that file in INDEX/CHECKSUM.TXT may be incorrect
in some versions of the disks. (Please check the online
errata list, as described near the beginning of this file,
for the most recent errata.)
NOTE ON EARLIER ERRATA FILES:
The ERRATA.TXT files for MGS MAG/ER volumes produced before
2001-11-28 may reflect an older numbering system for the
MGSM_1xxx volumes. For example, the volume currently named
MGSM_1005 used to be named MGSM_1001. The older numbering
system was used in ERRATA.TXT files on MGSM_1xxx and
MGSM_2xxx CDs and DMGSM_2xxx DVDs produced before 2001-11-28.
(This includes, but is not limited to, all logical volumes on
the DVD volumes DMGSM_2001 through DMGSM_2004.) Please refer
to a more up-to-date version of ERRATA.TXT to find the errata
for the MGSM_1xxx volumes.
MGSM_1001 In 2005, new versions of CK kernels for the AB-1, SPO-1
through and SPO-2 periods were released. Earlier versions of these
MGSM_1014 files were used in the processing of the AB-1, SPO-1 and
SPO-2 MAG data. Analysis by the MAG team indicates that this
change in the CK kernels does not necessitate reprocessing
of the MAG data.
MGSM_1001 No data are available for DOY 255, 256, and 267-271.
MGSM_1002 No data are available for DOY 316.
MGSM_1004 No data are available for DOY 051-085.
MGSM_1005 Limited data are available for DOY 086, 106, 116, 117 and 119.
MGSM_1006 The ORBFACTS.TAB file in the GEOMETRY directory does not
cover the day of the earliest data on the disk (DOY 147).
For DOY 148, 149 and 150, MAG data exist but could not be
processed due to a lack of ancillary data. Hence these
days of MAG data are not included on the disk.
MGSM_1010 Limited data are available for DOY 260. No data are
and available for DOY 257 - 259 and 261 - 265.
MGSM_1011
MGSM_1011 The ORBFACTS.TAB file in the GEOMETRY directory provides
through orbit periapsis and apoapsis information referenced to Mars
MGSM_1014 rather than to Phobos. This file does not cover the day of
the earliest data on disk MGSM_1011 (DOY 147).
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATA IN MGSM_1011 - MGSM_1014
ARE PHOBOS DATA RATHER THAN MARS DATA.
MGSM_1015 No data are available for 1998 DOY 266-268 and 1999 DOY
029-034. No ER data are available for 1998 DOY 269-287.
The ER data for 1998 DOY 288 - 1999 DOY 028 were collected
using two different versions of the flight software; the
data for DOY 292 contains data associated with both of
these versions. This version difference does not affect the
content of the archive volume.
For 1999 DOY 025 MAG data, corrected SCLK and fine time
values have been calculated during the process of correlating
solar array data with magnetometer data.
MGSM_1017 Both of these CDs contain data for 1999 DOY 067.
and
MGSM_2001
MGSM_2001 The ORBFACTS.TAB file in the GEOMETRY directory does not
cover the day of the earliest data on the disk (DOY 067).
MGSM_2001 On these volumes, the VOLDESC.CAT file does not have the
through LOGICAL_VOLUME_PATH_NAME keyword that the PDS standards
MGSM_2008 require it to have. This is because the decision to treat
these volumes as PDS logical volumes was not made until after
the volumes were completed.
After the production of these logical volumes, updated
versions of the files MISSION.CAT and ER_DS.CAT in the
CATALOG directory became available. These updated files
(or further updates of them) will be placed on later disks
in the DVD series.
The file DATA/ANCIL/PCK.LBL contains two occurrences of the
value PCK for the KERNEL_TYPE keyword. The correct
standard value is TARGET_CONSTANTS.
In the files FIG1.LBL and FIG2.LBL in the DOCUMENT
directory, the keyword ENCODING_TYPE has the value
GIF89. The correct standard value is GIF89A.
In the VOLDESC.CAT file, the VOLUME_NAME keyword value
contains the word "PREMAPPING". The correct word is
"MAPPING".
Personnel listed in the /CATALOG/PERSON.CAT file as having
a PDS_USER_ID value of "N/A" actually do have PDS_USER_IDs.
The value, in these instances, should be composed from the
person's first initial and last name (for example, the ID for
John Doe would be JDOE).
In *.LBL files in directory /DATA/ER, the MISSION_PHASE
keyword should have the value "MAPPING", not
"ORBIT_INSERTION".
In the file CATALOG/ER_INST.CAT, the words "pitch angle
boundary #" should read "pitch angle boundary # i".
MGSM_2002 There are no data and no HGA kernels available for DOY 087.
There are very little MAG data and no ER data available for
DOY 088. There are no data available for DOY 089 - 091
(these are around the time of the HGA deployment).
MGSM_2004 There are some data available, but no HGA kernels available,
for DOY 106. There are no data available for DOY 107 - 118
(these are around the time that the spacecraft was in
contingency mode).
MGSM_2005 Limited data are available for DOY 126, because of missing
HGA kernels.
MGSM_2047 The GEOMETRY/ORBFACTS.TAB file on this CD does not cover the
dates 2001-02-01 through 2001-02-06. These dates are covered
by the GEOMETRY/ORBFACTS.TAB file on the next CD volume,
MGSM_2048.
Note that MGSM_2047 contains both Mapping Phase data and
Extended Mission data.
MGSM_2046 In some preliminary versions of these disks, the index files
and after did not include listings for the file GEOMETRY/ORBFACTS.LBL.
This was (or will be) fixed in later versions of the disks.
MGSM_2057 No data are available for 2001 DOY 123 through 2001 DOY 128.
The spacecraft was in C-mode during that time.
MGSM_2069 No data are available for 2001 DOY 250 through 2001 DOY 253.
The spacecraft was in C-mode during that time.
MGSM_2086 Note that MGSM_2086 contains both Extended Mission and
Extended-Extended (E2) Mission data.
MGSM_2090 The times that MAG data were available for DOY 220 do not
overlap with the times that kernels were available for that
day. Therefore, MAG data files and browse RMS files are not
available for that day.
Solar conjunction of the spacecraft took place on days
DOY 213 through DOY 231.
MGSM_2096 MGS MAG/ER switched from low data rate to medium data rate
on 2003 DOY 009.
MGSM_2105 MAG data from 2003 DOY 125 are not available on this
disk due to the unavailability of kernels. Data are
available, but limited kernels are available, for 2003
DOY 124, 126 and 127. MAG data are available, but
but limited solar array data are available, for 2003
DOY 128. Hence most of these data are not calibrated.
MGSM_2109 No data are available for 2003-163 through 2003-168.
The spacecraft was in C-mode during that time.
MGSM_2122 There are limited data for 2003-288 and 2003-296.
MGSM_2128 There are limited data for 2003-350 through 2003-353.
MGSM_2143 Due to solar conjunction, there are limited data for
2004-251 through 2004-258.
MGSM_2144 Due to solar conjunction, there are limited data for
2004-259 through 2004-268.
Note that MGSM_2144 contains both Extended-Extended (E2)
Mission data and E3 Mission data.
MGSM_2147 Limited data are available for 2004 DOY 357 and 2004 DOY 362,
and no data are available for 2004 DOY 358 through
2004 DOY 361. The spacecraft was in C-mode during those
times.
MGSM_2151 The first online versions of MGSM_2151 through MGSM_2157 did
thru not have index or manifest files. This situation will be
MGSM_2157 corrected in later releases of these volumes.
MGSM_2153 (The following paragraph was adapted from documentation
thru received from the MAG/ER team.)
MGSM_2156 Starting towards the end of 2005 DOY 103, a pattern-like
rise and fall in the outboard rms for the x-direction appears
in the rms plots. The "pattern" occurs on almost every orbit
shortly before the spacecraft enters shadow. The pattern
disappears around 2005 DOY 133. The browse plot for
2005 DOY 104, 05104.PS (in directory BROWSE/RMS of MGSM_2153),
is an example of the reoccurring pattern. The increased rms
may be due to obscuration of portions of the solar panels
which could result in increased spacecraft interference.
As of Dec. 2005, this pattern is being investigated by
the science team.
MGSM_2165 Because of unavailability of kernels, no processed mag data
are available for the following days:
2005 DOY 212 - 215
2005 DOY 222
2005 DOY 223
2005 DOY 227
Data are available, but limited kernels are available, for:
2005 DOY 211
2005 DOY 216 - 221
2005 DOY 224 - 226
2005 DOY 228
The spacecraft entered a non-standard state on day
2005 DOY 211 at approximately 1600 hours. Because of
this, limited kernels were available.
MGSM_2166 Data are available, but limited kernels are available, for:
2005 DOY 229 - 233
2005 DOY 237
Limited data and kernels are available for
2005 DOY 238 (spacecraft entered safe mode).
No data are available for
2005 DOY 239 - 256 (spacecraft in safe mode).
There was corrupted playback solar array data for days
2005 DOY 229 - 238. The downloaded solar array
data was used in processing since it appeared cleaner.
MGSM_2167 Limited data and limited kernels are available for
2005 DOY 257 - 261
Limited data are available for
2005 DOY 263
MGSM_2168 Limited data and limited kernels are available for
2005 DOY 270 - 277
(anomaly with the playback of recorded data)
MGSM_2192 Limited data are available for 2006-221
MGSM_2194 Limited data are available for 2006-257
MGSM_2195 Limited data are available for 2006-290 through 2006-306
because of solar conjunction.
Data are available, but kernels are not available, for
2006-294, 2006-296 and 2006-298.
No data are available for 2006-295 and 2006-297.
The last day of data returned by the MGS MAG/ER instrument
is 2006-306.
