Variances applying to this archive
==================================
This archive does not contain individual echoes, which are acquired in
subsurface sounding modes without on-board processing. As explained in the
"MARSIS to Planetary Science Archive Interface Control Document", included in
the DOCUMENT directory, individual echoes are produced when MARSIS is
programmed to down-link raw data as they come out of the analogue-to-digital
converter.
Individual echoes can be acquired only for very limited time intervals,
because their data rate is much higher than that possible on the spacecraft
data bus. They always come in addition to the processed data, which are
transmitted to the ground in any case. Thus, individual echoes are the
unprocessed version of data which are also received, after processing, as part
of the scientific telemetry of the instrument.
Their format is very different from that of ordinary data products used in
scientific analysis, their coverage is limited, no science results have been
published based on them and the processing to produce scientifically useful
quantities is complex. For all these reasons, a standard processing chain to
produce PDS data products containing individual echoes has been given a lower
priority, although it will be eventually implemented to complete the archive.
