    Data Set Overview
    =================
      This data set contains raw open-loop Radio Science data from the
      Galileo (GLL) Gravitational Wave Experiments (GWE).  There are
      two Gravitational Wave experiments conducted over the following time
      periods:

             GWE 1:  April 28, 1994, to June 11,1994
             GWE 2:  May 20, 1995, to June 2, 1995

      The data set includes Original Data Records (ODRs) and the supporting
      information necessary to reduce the data.  Other data sets contain
      radio tracking data for the same periods.

      The experiment is described in detail in DESCRIPT.TXT in the DOCUMENT
      directory.  Another explanation of the experiment, as well as the
      ground equipment, spacecraft, and operations procedures, may be found
      in the Radio Science Handbook.  This handbook is also in the DOCUMENT
      directory.

      Open loop data records (ODRs) contain 8-bit samples of receiver
      output.  Each block of 400 data samples is accompanied by a 166
      byte header.  The ODR is described by a Software Interface
      Specification (SIS), included as  RSC11_11.TXT  in the

    ====
      Original Data Records (ODRs) were the primary data type for this raw
      data archive.  ODRs were generated at stations of the NASA Deep Space
      Network (DSN) and were distributed on 6250 bpi tape.  Those tapes have
      been copied to disk files, defined as PDS TABLE Objects, and archived
      on these CD-WO volumes.  ODRs are stored on CD-WO volumes in
      chronological order; ancillary data files (to support analysis)
      accompany ODRs in the CALIB and DOCUMENT directories.

      A nominal ODR contains 55000 records, each record having 166 bytes
      of header data and 400 bytes of 8-bit sample data.  Each of four
      receiver channels (X-RCP, S-RCP, X-LCP, and S-LCP) was sampled at
      200 samples per second; these channels appear in the output record
      as channels 1 through 4, respectively [see RSC11_11.TXT in the
      DOCUMENT directory of the archival volume].  Only the S-RCP
      channel contains a true signal for Galileo.

      Each ODR data file is accompanied by a full PDS detached label
      with name  ydddhhmm.LBL  which completely describes the contents
      of the ODR file.  The format and content of the ODR are also described
      in  or RSC11_11.TXT in the DOCUMENT directory of each
      archival volume.

    ==============
      The ancillary files are stored in the CALIB and DOCUMENT directories.
      Each ancillary file is accompanied by a detached PDS minimal label
      having the same file name except for the suffix 'LBL'.

      Low-Gain Antenna (LGA) Radiation Pattern
      -----------------------------------------
        The radiation pattern of the low-gain antenna (LGA) is described
        in files LGA1_DL.TAB and LGA1_UL.TAB in the CALIB directory.
        These files provide the radiation patterns for downlink and
        uplink, respectively.

        The Post-Operations Report describes the tracking coverage,
        spacecraft activity, and DSN equipment problems in a graphical
        format.  This report is in the DOCUMENT directory.

      Prior to creation of the final version of the archival data set,
      key elements of the archive were distributed for preliminary review.
      These included electronic versions of example PDS labels, CATALOG
      files, and Software Interface Specifications.  These materials were
      distributed to PDS personnel and the PDS Radio Science advisor.
